Story Book Jugglers--Randall Jarrell and Maurice Sendak, a visual record of their collaboration

In an earlier article, I quoted Maurice Sendak who said, "Interpretive illustration involves a kind of vigorous working with the writer. The difficulty and strain and joy of that particular book is the balancing between the text and the pictures....It's a funny kind of juggling act".

Here then is a presentation of the brilliant work of these two jugglers.  They only worked together on a few books but what an amazing set of works. Each of these books has wonderful writing, intricate and fine illustration, great design, and excellent quality in their production--which is the printing of the book itself.

  1. I'm pretty partial to Fly By Night... I think that might be my favorite of Maurice's work. Just something about the design of the pages, as well as the yummy illustrations. Lucky you to have his signature!
